about

Here Scott is playing his rendition of the first acoustic guitar fingerpicking tune he ever figured out. It was from a John Fahey record, and it was titled "Praying on the Old Campgrounds and Lonesome Blues". Later Scott learned that "Praying on the Old Campgrounds" was actually first recorded and performed by Mississippi John Hurt.
This piece launched Scott into a whole new genre of guitar music back in around 1974 or so. Scott had been playing electric guitar in a local blues band when he heard the John Fahey recording. He was so taken by it that he had to figure it out. He even figured this out using his Gibson Les Paul Custom electric guitar because he had no acoustic guitar at the time. In his attempt to play this off of the record, he ultimately figured out that this had to have been played in an open tuning. This was the first time he ever even thought about open tunings on the guitar. Previously, he had only played in standard tuning.
Over the years Scott has added a bit of his own touch to the composition.

Acoustic Reflections" is what Scott Balsai calls the compositions he creates on his acoustic guitar. "Each piece," he says, "reflects a sliver of my life, but taken together, they can be seen as musical diary of 'tone poems' which reflect my life as a whole." ... more
